Co-founders, Charles and James Dunlop, found an article in New England Journal of Medicine, "A Controlled Trial of Long-Term Inhaled Hypertonic Saline in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis." This article provided scientific support that ocean water provides natural therapy for people with CF, and inspired creation of the Mauli Ola Foundation Surf Experience Days. Over the years, MOF expanded their reach to all individuals with genetic conditions who can benefit from the healing powers of the ocean.

Mauli Ola Idea BankA note from Hana Pruzansky: I have helped my uncle Richard Schmidt with the Santa Cruz Mauli Ola Surf Experience Days. Also, my roommate, Kiana Fores, is an ambassador for Mauli Ola. This was an event near and dear to my heart. I worked at Bay City Brewing Co., as head of marketing, PR, and community outreach. I wanted to throw an event and tie it to a good cause, so Mauli Ola was an obvious choice for me. We had a percentage of all beer sales for the night dedicated to the Foundation and a silent auction of local artists' pieces where 100% of those proceeds went towards MOF. The surf community donated for a ticket raffle and 100% of ticket proceeds went to Mauli Ola, as well. Some donations were given by Ovan Eyewear, Surfari Surf School, Speaqua speakers, and vestal watches.
