MOF caught up with long-time Surf Experience Day veteran and CF patient Leo during a visit to Madera Children’s Hospital.
Stoked on MOF’s SEDs, Leo went for preparation surf on Wednesday, February 9 in the chilly waters of 38th street in Capitola, California. After getting that familiar surf itch, Leo’s parents helped him scratch it and took him to the beach for the day. While his current board sits in the repair shop after a ding to the nose, Leo still made it out to shred some sizeable waves on a rental board during low tide on Wednesday.
He is currently scaling down his board size to a 5’6” shortboard because it provides a better workout and is also beneficial in clearing him out. Not only does surfing help with Leo’s CF, but it also gives him confidence and provides great mental release. He recently got involved with his local water polo team and gets really excited when the team plays games in a salt water pool as he is more adapted to the salt water environment.
Leo is amped for the next Surf Experience Day in May 21st at Cowells Beach in Santa Cruz! The SEDs have also been a great place for Leo to catch up with some of his surf buddies and share the stoke while his parents chat with other CF parents.
Stay tuned for more information on MOF’s upcoming Surf Experience days! We can count on Leo to be sharing waves and stoke with us!
Teddy was born in Whittier, California, but luckily for the Mauli Ola Foundation he made his way west. He began surfing at an older age of 16, and after a couple short years, he won the US Amateur Championship. As a pro, Teddy has traveled all over the world to compete, and has been featured in numerous surf videos. When he isn't on tour with Mauli Ola, he can be found shredding the Northside of Huntington Pier. If he's not there, he's body boarding the shore break with his daughter Emma and son Dax.
