Surf Experience Day – Hosted by Makua Rothman – Haleiwa, HI
This past Saturday, December 5th, we had a successful Surf Experience Day, hosted by Makua Rothman, a pro surfer also known as ‘Big Wave Extraordinaire’. It was a beautiful day in Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park where the event took place. We received support from the community and several professional surfers, including John John Florence, Mick Fanning, Jamie O’Brien, Kala Alexander, Jason Magallenes, Sunny Garcia, Teddy Navarro, and Hans Hagen. The GoPro team also supported by filming the event.
Beau Whiddon, a young man affected by CF, had the opportunity to reconnect with Mauli Ola at the event after having surfed with the boys on the east coast during the National Humuhumunukunukuapua’a Tour earlier this year. His first experience surfing with MOF was so memorable that his ‘Make-A-Wish’ was to fly out to the north shore of Hawaii to attend this Surf Experience Day.
There was no official press at the event, however, the amount of support received from the community, professional surfers, and sponsors that attended the event made an immeasurable impact. The supporters undoubtedly raised more awareness than any news outlet could have, as the experience of sharing their love for surfing and helping others is what ultimately makes a difference.
Teddy was born in Whittier, California, but luckily for the Mauli Ola Foundation he made his way west. He began surfing at an older age of 16, and after a couple short years, he won the US Amateur Championship. As a pro, Teddy has traveled all over the world to compete, and has been featured in numerous surf videos. When he isn't on tour with Mauli Ola, he can be found shredding the Northside of Huntington Pier. If he's not there, he's body boarding the shore break with his daughter Emma and son Dax.
